READSTONE ENVIRONMENT GROUP – REG

TAKING STEPS TOWARDS A SUSTAINABLE FUTURE

Gardening Group

We have a very small but keen gardening group that helps to keep green areas around the villages looking colourful, tidy and pleasant for everyone to see. Everyone is welcome to join, we are a friendly bunch, usually we meet once a week. But if you could lend a hand for a couple of hours once a week.

Come and join us! No previous gardening experience and knowledge necessary. For more information contact us at month or every two months that would really help out. readstoneinfo@gmail.com.

As well as weeding our group has sown wildflower seeds as part of the Pollinator Project with the local schools and (?hyperlink here to schools) planted bulbs and a variety of annual and perennial plants. You may have noticed some of the things we have done at Worthalls Road, Friendship Mill, Turner Fold and around Church Street Gardens.

This is an unadopted road running down from Whalley Road to the cricket field. Although attempts have been made in the past to ‘beautify’ the area the banking on the right hand side had been an eye sore for a few years. REG members took on the task of weeding, adding compost and planting the area up again. As you can see from the pictures there is quite a difference now and some residents have made appreciative comments.

The stone wall of the banking was built up by a member of Martholme Greenway Group who also put down some wooden edging which makes the area look neater.

On Thursday 7th November 2024, 6 members of our gardening team strimmed, cut back and cleared the 2 wildflower beds on either side of Simonstone Lane at the junction with the A678, Blackburn Road, in preparation for reseeding next year.
